Add a bulk scanning mode
The idea is to scan lots of bar codes first and store their information on disk, then enter a "bulk identify" mode where informatin for each bar code is fetched and the user can identify the item.

Add the ability to order shelves by different criteria
i.e. alphabetically by title/artist, chronologically, etc.

This has been planned for a long time, and a decent amount of code for that is already there. It’s been cut from PackRat’s initial release because the ADC2 deadline was looming…

Add pictures of items in the collection
Right now, images for each item are pulled from the internet, but for many items no image is available. It'd be great if you could use the phone's camera to snap cover images yourself.
For that to happen, the images need to be stored persistently on the phone, though. That's not happening currently, because storage on mobile phone is limited! But it would be a good idea to add the option of persistently storing cover images on the SD card. Adding your own pictures would then be a breeze.

Synchronize collections between several devices
I'd like to synchronize my collections between multiple devices. If I make changes on one device, I want those changes to show up on my other devices as well.

Pretty much the same as the cloud storage option, i.e. once the database is stored in the cloud, it’ll be relatively easy to have several devices update from/to the same cloud storage.

Use the Barcode Scanning Apps in the Market.
Use the Barcode Scanning Apps in the Market instead of having the code built into you app. That way people can choice there favorite scanner. And you don't need to worry about updating the scanner code. And you app would take up less space.

Under review for now – will consider it if I find a good way of handling this.

add support for non-media items (was: add wine support)
Original: If there is access to wine barcodes this would be a fantastic organizer for wine cellars. A quantity field would be required, a vintage field, etc.
Edit: This has come up for other items as well, e.g. currency. Generally speaking, it should all be possible, but don't expect it soon. I'm sad to say that it would require quite a lot of restructuring internally.
In addition to that, Google Base (where product information is pulled from) has fairly good data for some types of items, but not for others. It'd probably require a good online wine (or currency, etc)… more

provide a cloud storage option
I haven't been able to find a collection manager that can store my data stored in the cloud. I'd prefer Google Docs storage but a self-hosted mysql/postgresql database would be fine. Perhaps the persistence layer could be implemented as plugins so people could write their own.

Include books.google.com in your search if possible
I have tried all collection apps in the market and most have problems with recognizing part of my collection. I found one though that did better then the rest but only for books.
I love PackRat though so I looked into why the other one found books that PackRat didn't and it turns out (since that app is only for books) it uses books.google.com
Is it possible to add books.google.com as a place to look for a product if your normal method comes up empty? Or use books.google.com to find the name and then use the name again in google… more

Sounds like a great idea, and I’ve actually glanced at books.google.com for that previous optimization. I can’t guarantee that it’ll actually improve things, though – but I’ll certainly give it a go.

Shared database
It would be nice to build a database so that we can work together to improve the data. I can get info on barcode and title but often the rest of the info is missing a shared effort might help us all.

Working on it as we speak.
I don’t know what exactly is happening here:
- Some countries seem to use barcodes that don’t exist in Google Base, even if the item itself can be found by searching for title.
- It seems Google Base returns different data depending on the country in which the request is made.Either way, a shared DB is exactly what I’ve been thinking of, what I’ve discussed with other users briefly, and what I’m working on now.
Patience, though. I’m taking the opportunity to rewrite some of PackRat’s core, so that I can also accommodate other features more easily. It will be a few weeks at least.

Add a Display Mode/Slideshow
Have a Display Mode that Just Shows The Images of the items sitting on shelves. I would like it to be drag and drop so people can tinker with ways to sort there collections. A Slideshow mode might be a nice screen saver too.

Add the ability to rate your collection
I'd like to add a rating of one to five stars to each item in my collection, and then be able to sort items by their rating.

Link items to local or online retailers, of just to the ShopSavvy app.

Filter out Ebay results
When scanning in books you get a few regular results, and massive numbers of results from ebay, add an option to ignore those when pulling search results

Add photo/location to shelves
Taken from "Who did I lend this book too?":
Same idea, slightly tweaked. I expect this is already catered for: I have multiple (real) shelves, boxes in storage, school/office. Would be great to be able to name/photograph a location where the item is, so I can locate the item really quickly.

vinyl and suchlike
would you be able to use existing packrat users data to a database to increase success rates when scanning barcodes... i have found that scanning my vinyl collection left me with almost 0% success rate... have spent a long time searching artwork and inputting data.. it would be nice to think it could help other users

PackRat on iPhone
PackRat on Android phones is great, but what about the iPhone/iPod Touch? It'd be awesome if this app existed on those phones as well.
